The Importance Of Our Industry
21/02/2011
What does the Oil and Gas Industry do for me? Actually, you will be surprised at the range of products and industries the raw materials from exploration and extraction touch. It is too simple a concept to say that it is just about giving us the petrol we need to travel in cars, buses, trains etc. It is not. That is an important part of it but by no means the only part.
Household Use
We use Oil and Gas by products on a daily basis in our homes. To cook food, to heat homes in the winter, to cool homes in the summer and oil - or products refined from it - is even used in paints that we use to decorate our homes.
It is estimated that “Oil and Gas provides the world's 6.9 billion people with 60 percent of their daily energy needs” *. This makes it of incredible importance to the smooth functioning of society. Couple it with the other products and services that need Oil and Gas derivatives and you have an industry that is firmly at the heart of our lives.
Manufacturing Industry
Oil and Gas is a core component in the manufacturing sector. It is in fertilizers, synthetic rubber and plastics to name a few products. There are few crops grown without fertilizer and few buildings built without rubber and/or plastic these days. Strange as it may sound then Oil is one the essential ingredients in our food production today, not only that but without it we would not have roofs over our heads either.
The Rag Trade
Again, this may seem a million miles away from the black sticky crude oil we see pulled out of the ground across the globe but Oil is instrumental in the production of fabrics which in turn make products like clothes and carpets. It is used in the production of polyester and acrylic both of which are extensively used to make clothes. Probably the most famous of the synthetic fibres is Nylon. Produced in the mid thirties by DuPont it quickly became a hit because of its silky quality. It was not only used in the production of stockings but also in parachutes - vital for the war effort.
The Oil and Gas industry provides the base materials for many more industries than just transportation. It helps move the world, feed the world and dress the world. As such, the importance of this industry is difficult to understate.
